A piece of history....
A member of Dryden's Pioneer Tree, Tom Lewis' farm is remembered...
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis moved to Canada in 1907. As they left England, on-route to Saskatchewan, Mrs. Lewis fell ill - and the Lewis' got off the train in Oxdrift. They stayed with a family residing in Oxdrift, at this time Tom had a feeling the land had great potential for crop growing.
The Lewis' bought property, started a family and build their home. Tom was a "good clean farmer, very interested in proving what the land could produce." Tom was an active member of the Dryden Agricultural Society, and was president for nine years. He entered exhibits in the fair, and won prizes for his oats and seeds, but his specialty was potatoes.
In 1939 he was coined the "Potato King" after winning many first place prizes at the Toronto Exhibition and the Lakehead Fair.
The time came in 1953 for the Lewis' to sell their farm to a man named Mr. Garner. They moved into Dryden and made their home on Albert Street.
